This summer, I will be returning to the Von Hand festival to share a craft that is close to my heart ( and sole). From August 2 to 8, a group of makers will gather in the woods of Bendorf, Germany, to work with their hands and connect with nature. I will be hosting a two-day workshop where we will make leather sandals from scratch.
Making your own footwear is a rewarding process. We start with a piece of high-quality leather and work through every step together. You will learn how to measure your feet for a custom fit, cut the material, and use traditional tools to assemble the sandals. By the end of the workshop, you will walk away with a pair of sandals that you made yourself.
The Von Hand festival is a unique place for this kind of work. It is not just about the end product, but about the focus and patience that handwork requires. There is something special about sitting outdoors, surrounded by other people who are also carving, weaving, or forging. It is a week of slow living and learning.
