Classes & workshops

Teaching

I teach traditional crafts like spoon carving, leatherwork, Japanese lacquerwork, and now and then sandalmaking at festivals, at small workshops I host myself and occasionally on request at schools or businesses.

Classes are practical and unhurried. Beginners are welcome, and so are people who have been at it longer than I have. Classes are taught in English unless all participants speak Dutch.

New dates go up through the year and I don't always plan far ahead. Leave your email and I will let you know when the next ones are set — no more than a handful of messages a year.

Sandalmaking at Von Hand

Festival

Mon 3rd and Tue 4th of August 2026 · 10:00 - 17:00 · Brexbachtal, Germany

I'm returning to one of the loveliest craft festivals, this time teaching you how to make your own sandals. I learned to make these sandals in 2016 from Canadian sandalmaker Keith Gage-Cole. Making footwear with vegetable-tanned leather is a practical way to learn the trade. This workshop covers the basics. We cut the leather, stitch the pieces together, and burnish the edges. Absolute beginners can join, and experienced leatherworkers will learn something new. You walk away with your own handmade footwear, and the sandals are ready for many sunny seasons.
